Mayan Calendar Regarding 2012

Why does the Mayan calendar end at 2012? When the Mayan worker chiseling the rock calendar ran out of space when adding 2012, he asked the chief if he should get another rock to continue on. The chief replied, "Don't bother. No one is going to be around by that time." Thus, the end-of-the-world scare was born.
