Grudge That Lasts Forever

When other people argue with each other, they tend to get over it after a short while. I don't argue with others much, but when it happens, it always seems that the other person turns it into a grudge that lasts forever. Why? It seems the more peaceful you treat people the worse they will treat you when they are mad.
